FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Host Methodist University snapped Shenandoah's three-game women's basketball winning streak with a 61-56 USA South victory Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs (10-10, 7-6 USA South) led virtually throughout the contest in finishing off the season sweep over Shenandoah (8-12, 5-8).
MU went ahead for good on a Courtney Woods 3-pointer at the 10:43 mark of the first and eventually stretched its lead out to 13 points before the Hornets scored the final eight points of the first.
The margin remained in single digits the rest of the way and thanks to another Shenandoah run, this one 6-0, saw SU trail by just one, 51-50, with 4:45 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Methodist reeled off the next five points of the contest to reassert control.
Mandy Johnston, who finished with a co-game-high 13 points, had a fast break layup to make it 56-54 in favor of the Monarchs, but SU could get no closer.
MU sealed the game with a 5-2 run to finish.
Johnston and Sam Akers both had 13 for Shenandoah with Sara D'Amico adding 10.
Jackie Lyles paced the victors with 17 points.
Shenandoah is back in action on Super Bowl Sunday with a 2:00 contest at Peace.
