BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Host Bridgewater College used a pair of strong innings to key a 9-6 non-league baseball victory over No. 22/RV Shenandoah University Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles (9-1) scored five runs in the third and four more in the fourth to down SU (5-4) for the first time since March 6, 2008.
Shenandoah had taken the early lead on a Cory Nelson RBI triple in the top of the third before BC answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame off of Hornets starter Bryce Sears (1-1).
Sears allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings.
Classmate Kyle Gladu pitched the next two innings, giving up one run on three hits, before freshman Matt Riegler recorded the final eight outs.
Gladu registered all four strikeouts for SU pitchers.
The Hornets did make matters interesting with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, but could not complete the comeback.
Nelson drove in two of those runs with a two-run HR in the fifth.
In the sixth, Joey Donofrio and Jake Pendergraft hit back-to-back dingers.
Shenandoah had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.
Pendergraft had three of the squad's 12 hits on the day.
The Hornets host Ferrum this weekend in a USA South Conference series. The series is scheduled for 1:00 games both Saturday and Sunday, but could change based upon the Saturday forecast. All schedule updates will be posted to www.suhornets.com.
