WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University celebrated its softball Senior Day by splitting a USA South Conference doubleheader with N.C. Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (15-10, 6-6 USA South) was a 6-5 winner in game one before NCWC (13-13, 4-10) rallied for a 10-7 victory in the nightcap.
SU won game one in walkoff fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the victory.
Sophomore Brittany Guepe reached on an error to lead off and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs.
Guepe's classmate, Heather Sink, then singled up the middle and moved to second as Wesleyan elected to throw home in an effort to hold Guepe at third.
Lauren McCabe made that move academic one batter later with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Guepe and tie the game at 5-5.
Jordan Wolford ended matters three pitches later with a single through the left side to bring Sink home with the game-winning run.
Senior Brooke Over (7-7) was the winning pitcher. She allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in 7.0 innings while striking out 11.
Denise Mitchell, Sink and McCabe all had two hits with Morgan Coble driving in three on a triple in the first.
In game two, the Hornets had a 7-3 lead after three, but could only watch as the Bishops scored three in the fifth, three more in the sixth and one in the seventh to salvage the split.
Kendra Hoes, who had a solo HR in game one, hit a three-run dinger in game two to begin the NCWC comeback.
Amanda Litwin (3-2) took the loss in relief. She allowed four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Mitchell had three hits with Sink, McCabe, Wolford and Coble all getting two each.
Shenandoah hosts Ferrum on Tuesday in a USA South Conference doubleheader after traveling to Catholic on Sunday for a non-league doubleheader. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00.
