Softball Splits with Macon

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 25 Shenandoah University celebrated its entrance into the softball national rankings by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Randolph-Macon College Wednesday afternoon.

After R-MC (7-3) took game one 3-0, the Hornets returned the favor with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Shenandoah (5-1) got all of the offense it would need in the bottom of the first inning in game two.

Junior Denise Mitchell doubled to right off of game two starter Kelly Beard (0-1) and scored when pitcher Jordan Wolford lofted a two-out single to center.

Wolford (3-0) allowed just three hits and walked three in 4 2/3 innings of work.

With runners on second and third and two outs in the fifth, Hornets coach Marlena Kotynski turned to junior Amanda Litwin to snuff out the rally.

Facing No. 3 hitter Sharese Davis, Litwin recorded a strikeout looking to end the threat. She then retired the final six Macon hitters in order to record her first save of the season.

Mitchell also scored the final run of the game as she led off the SU sixth with a single and moved to third when RMC booted the ball in right for a two-base error.

Wolford again drove in the run, this time with a single through the left side.

Game one starter Heather Lewis (6-0) held Shenandoah to just four hits in the lid-lifter.

Macon got its first run in the fourth on two hits and a walk before scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fifth against senior Brooke Over (2-1).

Over allowed the three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks in 4 1/3. She struck out three before turning it over to Litwin.

Offensive, sophomore Morgan Coble had two hits in three at-bats.

Shenandoah is back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Salisbury University Invitational.
