WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Christopher Newport University claimed the 2012 USA South Conference women's lacrosse regular season title with a 14-10 win over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
CNU (11-1, 7-0 USA South) wins its eighth straight regular season title with the win over the Hornets (10-3, 6-1).
At the USA South Conference Tournament semi-finals beginning on Friday at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C., Christopher Newport will take on No. 4 Ferrum at 1 while Shenandoah meets No. 3 Greensboro in the 3:30 contest.
The championship game is set for Saturday at Springwood Park.
CNU jumped all over the Hornets Saturday morning with three goals in the first 4:39 of the contest before sophomore Samantha Sisson finally broke though for the hosts with an unassisted goal at 23:37.
The tally, one of five Sisson had on the day, started a run in which the two teams traded the final 10 goals of the first.
A 3-1 SU run, in which Sisson sandwiched two goals around a Corrinne Kosmowski tally, made it 7-5 in favor of the Captains.
Unfortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium faithful, Katie Kelly scored on a free position shot at 1:37 for CNU to give the visitors an 8-5 lead at the break.
Christopher Newport then took a commanding lead by scoring the first three goals of the second.
Sisson led the Hornets with five goals and Amy Rollins added a goal and two assists.
Kelly had four goals and two assists for CNU.
