WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Lynchburg College took the first ODAC battle of the volleyball Hornets with a 3-1 win over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon.
The LC Hornets (8-4, 2-2 ODAC) were 25-16, 25-10,l 21-25, 25-16 victors over the SU Hornets (7-2, 1-1).
Shenandoah got its lone win coming out of the 10-minute promotional break between the second and third sets by going on a 10-2 run in the middle of the third.
Freshman Blake Parkes served the first six points of this run as Samantha Schambach had two kills, Mary Harshman one and Lynchburg made three attack errors.
LC did make things interesting by cutting its deficit to just three points at 24-21, but Schambach finished off a set from Parkes to clinch the set for the hosts.
Lynchburg pulled the same trick in the fourth, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 10-5 lead on the strength of two service aces and a kill from Aricquel Payne.
LC never trailed again in the match.
Payne led the victors with 20 kills while Rebecca Loftis added 11.
Haley Smith had seven kills for SU with Parkes chipping in 14 assists and Kelcy Brown 10. Nicole Mueller paced the defense with 13 digs.
Shenandoah travels to Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday for a 7:00 ODAC match.
