WINCHESTER, Va. – Behind a career night from freshman Imani Heggins and a stellar second half performance from senior Nicole Gilbertson, Shenandoah University registered a 72-66 ODAC women's basketball victory over Bridgewater College Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (7-9, 3-4 ODAC) received 19 points from Heggins and 14 points from Gilbertson, all but two in the second half, to down the previously league-leading Eagles (7-6, 5-2).
Heggins missed more shots from the line – six – than from the field, three, on her way to the career night.
The freshman was 9 for 12 from the line and also pulled down 10 of the team's 37 rebounds.
SU held a 37-29 advantage on the glass with Heggins and Holly Chittenden, with 13 rebounds, both posting double-doubles.
Chittenden had 13 points to record her seventh double-double of the year.
The game was close throughout, with the two teams within seven points of each other for the final 30:40 of the contest.
The Hornets, who led by 10 points early in the first, finally took the lead for good on a Gilbertson fastbreak layup at the 2:03 mark of the second.
Thanks to four Gilbertson free throws and another two from junior Sara D'Amico, SU held a 68-61 advantage with 28 seconds remaining.
The Eagles sandwiched a fastbreak layup and a 3-pointer around two Crystal Petrus free throws to cut the deficit to four points with five seconds left, but D'Amico canned both of her free throws on the ensuing possession and BC was unable to get off another shot.
In addition to Heggins' 19, Gilbertson's 14 and 13 from Chittenden, Petrus and D'Amico both had 11 points.
Jessica Mullen had a game-high 28 for the visitors.
Shenandoah continues this homestand on Saturday with a 2:00 ODAC contest against Washington and Lee.
