VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped Tuesday evening with a 59-40 ODAC loss at Virginia Wesleyan.
The Hornets (8-10, 4-5 ODAC) missed 18 of their first 20 shots from the field as Virginia Wesleyan (11-7, 6-3) started the game on a 22-5 run.
SU was able to play the Marlins virtually even in the second half, being outscored by only one point, but could not make up for the cold start.
Shenandoah, which was held without a three-point basket for the first time in 112 games, found itself down 30-12 at the halftime break after shooting 4 for 24 (17 percent) from the field and 4 for 11 (36 percent) from the line in the opening stanza.
The start of the second half brought more of the same as VWC scored 13 of the first 17 points of the second to expand its lead to 43-16 by the 15:19 mark.
The Hornets refused to fold their collective tents and finished the game on a 12-8 run of their own to provide the final 19-point margin.
The 40 points is also a season-low for SU.
Senior Nicole Gilbertson paced the visitors with 10 points with freshman Imani Heggins adding eight.
The two teams split 82 rebounds with Gilbertson pulling down 10 and Holly Chittenden seven for Shenandoah.
Sarah Seipp had a game-high 14 points for the victors.
SU hosts Lynchburg on Saturday in a 2:00 "Battle of the Hornets". It is Winter Wipeout Weekend, sponsored by the Shenandoah SAAC, and all fans are encouraged to wear red to the game.
