VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - League leading Virginia Wesleyan kept its ODAC record perfect Wednesday evening with an 84-51 men's basketball victory over Shenandoah.
The Marlins (13-4, 9-0 ODAC) started the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back against SU (3-15, 0-9).
The lead reached double-digits by the 15:35 mark and expanded to 21 points with 3:16 remaining in the first half.
VWC shot 41 percent from the field (15 for 37) and used a 27-12 advantage on the glass to outscore the Hornets 12-2 in second chance points.
The lead was as large as 25 points before Bryce Mitchell canned a jumper in the paint 13 seconds before halftime to send the two teams into their respective locker rooms with the score 44-21.
The two teams split the initial 24 points of the second before the hosts turned up the pressure and pulled away with an 18-6 run from the 12:52 to 6:39 marks.
After trailing by 36 points on two different occasions during that run, Shenandoah scored 12 of the final 22 points of the contest to fall by 33.
Sophomore Jared Carithers paced SU with 13 points with Sharif Almulla adding 11 points.
DJ Woodmore had 22 points and Chris Astorga 16 for the victors.
VWC had a 51-28 advantage on the boards.
Shenandoah hosts Randolph on Saturday at 4:00 in the backend of an ODAC doubleheader with the SU women. It is Winter Wipeout, sponsored by the SAAC, and coach Rob Pryor's club will wear their red alternate uniforms as part of a 'red-out'.
