WINCHESTER, Va. – A cold shooting start doomed the Shenandoah University women's basketball team in a 70-28 non-league loss to Mary Washington Tuesday evening.
Shenandoah (1-4) saw Mary Washington (3-1) jump out to a 28-point halftime lead as the Hornets missed 20 of 21 shots from the field and committed 20 turnovers in the opening stanza.
The Eagles scored 14 points off of those miscues as they built the big advantage.
After seeing UMW expand the lead out to 36-points, SU began to warm up and nine of the game's next 11 points to cut the deficit to 41-12 with 13:24 to play.
Sophomore Imani Heggins, who led the hosts with 14 points, had the final points in this spurt with a jumper in the lane.
Junior Holly Chittenden backed up Heggins with seven points and nine rebounds.
Brianne Comden had 18 points and Sam Partonen 13 with 10 boards for UMW.
Partonen scored the first 10 points of the contest for her squad.
Shenandoah shot 39 percent in the second half.
SU is back in action on Sunday at 4:00 in a non-league contest against Wilkes.
