WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Emory and Henry used a 14-point second quarter to key a 37-20 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (3-6, 2-4 ODAC) scored the opening touchdown of the game on an Andrew Smith 2-yard run, but E&H (5-4, 2-4) quickly answered and never trailed again.

After Smith capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive with the 2-yard run at 9:54 of the first, Wasps quarterback Kyle Boden hit Jacob Hess with a 62-yard pass to make it 7-7 with 8:58 remaining in the opening stanza.

Boden did the work himself on the next drive, running 53 yards on a 3rd-and-18 play to put the visitors up 14-7.

The Hornets answered back with 1:21 remaining in the first, driving 75 yards in seven plays to tie the contest at 14-14.

Quarterback Drew Ferguson finished off the drive with a 1-yard plunge on 4th-and-goal.

Now seemingly locked in a shootout, E&H took just five plays to drive 64 yards to take a 21-14 lead just 23 seconds into the second.

The Wasps, who would lead the rest of the way, successfully converted an on-side kick following this TD to maintain possession.

The SU defense was able to hold on the ensuing drive, forcing Emory & Henry to miss a 47-yard field goal.

Another Boden TD pass, this one to Lucas Kirby, extended the E&H advantage to 28-14 with 5:15 remaining in the half.

Shenandoah had an opportunity to cut the deficit in half on its next possession, but Smith was stopped at the Wasps 1 on a 4th-and-goal play from the 3.

The second half turned largely into a defensive struggle, with Emory & Henry sandwiching a 22-yard Austin Breed field goal and a Cleo Cooper 18-yard TD reception around on a Justin Neff to Smith 14-yard TD pass for the hosts.

The Wasps outgained SU 450 to 300, including 205 to 123 on the ground.

Smith finished his day with 18 carries for 112 yards for the Hornets, but was held to just four yards rushing in the second half.

Boden was 15 for 28 for 245 yards and three touchdowns through the air and added another 71 yards rushing on 10 attempts.

Ferguson and Neff combined to complete 19 passes in 32 attempts for 163 yards but Ferguson was picked off three times.

Sean Blackman had nine tackles to lead the SU defense.

Shenandoah concludes its 2013 season next Saturday with a 1:00 kickoff against Washington and Lee.
