WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened its 2013 season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader split versus former USA South Conference foe Averett.
Shenandoah (1-1) came back to win game two 9-2 after falling 9-1 to the Cougars (4-2) in the opener.
Junior Stephanie Cameron (1-0) threw a complete game in the nightcap to salvage the split for the Hornets.
Cameron allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven.
SU banged out 16 hits in the game two victory, including three each by Madison Bradley, Morgan Coble and Denise Mitchell.
Mitchell and Kimberly Brady both drove in three runs in the win.
Shenandoah was held to just five hits in the opener with junior Erica Kondzielawa getting two in two at-bats.
Kondzielawa also scored the Hornets lone run with a seventh inning single and scored on a Coble double to left center.
Senior Jordan Wolford (0-1) took the loss in the opener. She allowed seven runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Brady and Heather Sink had two hits each in the nightcap.
Shenandoah hosts Mary Washington on Wednesday at 3:00 in a non-league doubleheader.
