VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team split its two games Friday evening at the
Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast.
The Hornets (4-2) opened the two-day, four-game tournament with a 3-0 victory over Neumann (Pa.) before falling 7-4 to Wilkes (Pa.) in the nightcap.
Junior Stephanie Cameron (2-0) tossed a four-hit shutout for SU in the opener, striking out 10 and not allowing Neumann (0-2) a base runner into scoring position until the sixth.
Denise Mitchell plated Brittany Guepe with what proved to be the game-winning run on a groundout in the first inning.
Guepe had led off the Shenandoah first with a single through the left side.
The Hornets added single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull away from the Knights.
Guepe and Erica Kondzielawa both had two hits in the win.
In the Wilkes contest, the Colonels (1-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 4-4 tie with SU.
The Hornets had six hits in the contest with Guepe finishing 2 for 4.
Mitchell had a two-run single in the fifth.
Senior Amanda Litwin took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Litwin, who had come on for freshman Megan Tripp to start the fifth, gave way to Brianne Morlock eight batters into that same frame.
Morlock recorded the final four outs without allowing an additional run.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with Frostburg State at 10 a.m. and Methodist at 2 p.m.
