Thompson Tosses Complete Game

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – No. 19/27 Shenandoah University won its sixth straight non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 victory at Mary Washington.

Freshman Darrell Thompson (1-0) threw a complete game nine-hitter for the Hornets (7-2).

SU scored two runs in the third and three more in the sixth to pull away from Mary Washington (7-6).

The Eagles got to Thompson in the fifth, scoring their only run on a two-out double followed by a single up the middle.

The Hornets provided Thompson with all of the offense he would need in the third, loading the bases on two walks and an infield single followed by a balk and a Corbin Lucas RBI single to right.

The RBI was one of three for Lucas on the day – he singled to center in the sixth to play Dan Powers and Michael Paul with a pair of unearned runs.

Powers had reached on an error by losing pitcher Mike Straub (0-1) and Paul on a walk.

Lucas had two of the Hornets five hits with J.J. McDaniel, Paul and Lew Johnson collecting the other three.

Thompson allowed the one run on nine hits and one walk while striking out eight.

These two teams are scheduled to play again on Thursday, weather permitting. Check www.suhornets.com for schedule updates.
