WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team completed its initial ODAC slate Saturday afternoon by sweeping a pair of from visiting Guilford College.
The Hornets (22-16, 10-10 ODAC) won 5-1 in the opener before holding on for a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.
The two wins clinches at least the sixth seed for Shenandoah at the upcoming conference tournament. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament begins on Friday at the Moyer Complex in Salem.
Guilford (18-18, 4-14) nearly came all the way back from a 9-0 deficit in game two, but SU senior Jordan Wolford posted her first save of the season by recording the final four outs of the game.
Wolford got a strikeout to end the threat in the sixth and then induced two groundouts and a popout in the seventh to preserve the victory for freshman Megan Tripp (8-6).
Tripp allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings of action.
Shenandoah jumped out to that nine-run lead with five runs in the second and four in the third.
Brittany Guepe had three hits and Kimberly Brady, Lauren McCabe and Emily Wilson added two each in the win.
Junior Stephanie Cameron (14-5) was dominant in game one, striking out 11 in 6 1/3 to keep the Hornets in total control.
Cameron struck out the side in both the first and fourth.
She was provided with all of the offense she would need with three runs in the first before the squad added two more in the fifth.
Brady was 3 for 4 and both Morgan Coble and Heather Sink had two hits in the opener.
Erica Kondzielawa had the game-winning RBI with a two-run double in the first that plated Brady and Denise Mitchell.
The official bracket for the tournament will be posted this evening.
