WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its regular season Tuesday afternoon by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from the Catholic University of America.
The Hornets (24-16) were 6-5 victors in the nightcap after taking game one 6-2.
Catholic (16-14) made things interesting in game two with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but junior Stephanie Cameron (15-5) induced a fly ball to left for the final out of the contest.
Cameron tossed a complete game and allowed the five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Shenandoah did most of its game two damage in the fourth, scoring five runs, after plating its initial run in the first.
Senior Denise Mitchell had the big blow with a two-out, three-run triple down the leftfield line.
Brittany Guepe was 2 for 4 and drove in a run in the fourth with a single up the middle.
CUA scored the first run of the opener, on a bases loaded walk, but could only watch as SU took control with three runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Guepe, Mitchell and Emily Wilson all drove in runs in that second inning rally for the Hornets while Lauren McCabe plated a run in the third and Erica Kondzielawa the fourth inning run on a single up the middle.
Kondzielawa had a game-high three hits with Guepe adding two.
Senior Jordan Wolford, who came on for freshman Megan Tripp in the fourth, earned the win. Wolford (1-1) struck out two in 3 2/3 innings pitched and allowed just one hit.
Shenandoah opens up ODAC Tournament play on Friday at 2:00 against third-seeded Roanoke.
