LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 23/RV Shenandoah University saw its ODAC Baseball Tournament hopes end Friday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to No. 23/24 Bridgewater College.
The Hornets (27-12) was one strike away from a one-run win over the top-seeded Eagles (29-10), only to see BC steal the victory with two singles, two hit batsman and a bases loaded walk.
Freshman Michael Scimanico (5-1), who came on in relief of classmate Cameron Lundmark with two outs and a runner on first, hit the first two batters he faced and then walked ODAC Player of the Year Nick Fulk on four pitches to tie the game.
Brian Sanderson then had an infield single up the middle to allow designated hitter Derrik Walling to score the game-winning run.
Shenandoah had appeared to be in control of the contest as freshman Billy Arens, making just his second start at shortstop this season, had one-out single through the left side in the seventh to score Andrew Creamer with the Hornets third run.
Creamer had led off the SU seventh with a double down the leftfield line.
Lundmark, who had taken over for classmate Darrell Thompson in the fourth, was cruising by scattering two hits and striking out two prior to the ninth.
The freshman then got a flyout and a strikeout in the ninth before allowing a Christian Armstrong single to keep BC in the contest. SU skipper Kevin Anderson turned to Scimanico in an attempt to close it out, but the frosh could not record the 27th out.
Creamer and Corbin Lucas both had two hits for the victors with Lucas scoring the Hornets first run and driving in the second on a sixth inning single up the middle.
Bridgewater had four players with two hits each.
