Roanoke Sweeps Volleyball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Roanoke College swept Shenandoah University 3-0 Tuesday evening in the opening ODAC volleyball match of the season for both schools.

Roanoke (6-3, 1-0 ODAC) won at 18, 20 and 20 over the Hornets (5-3, 0-1).

The Maroons gained control of the match with a 7-0 run to complete the first set.

Trailing 18-12, Shenandoah, on the strength of two kills each from Haley Smith and Danyelle McGrady, roared back to tie it 18-18.

Roanoke called timeout in an effort to break the SU momentum and it worked as RC got a Carrie Heldreth kill to win back the serve and then scored the final six points of the set to clinch the victory.

The Hornets answered back by scoring the initial three points of the second, but Roanoke replied with three of the next four points to quickly tie it at 4-4.

The two teams remained within two points of one another until the Maroons finally took the lead for good with a 5-1 run in the middle of the set that saw the visitors lead 14-11.

Shenandoah would get no closer than one point the rest of the set.

The Hornets led by five points at 12-7 in the third before Roanoke put itself in position to close out the match with a 9-2 spurt.

Taking the lead with a Samantha Klostermann kill, the visitors led for the remainder of the contest.

Smith and Rachel Gross had six kills each for SU with Allie Pieper and Blake Parkes adding four each.

Jasmine Callahan had a match-high 23 assists with Taylor Anderson posting 22 digs.

Macey Tyree led all players with 10 kills for RC.

Shenandoah hosts Virginia Wesleyan Friday night in a 6:30 ODAC matchup.
