WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker in its home opener Wednesday evening, losing 3-2 to Penn St. – Altoona.
Shenandoah (3-2) took a 1-0 lead with a 34-32 win in the opening set before PSU-A (2-3) answered back with wins at 21 and 23 in the second and third.
Coach Jaime Terenzi's team then forced a fifth and deciding set with a 27-25 victory in the fourth.
Unfortunately for the home crowd, PSU-A controlled the fifth throughout, winning 15-11 to clinch the victory.
Junior Samantha Schambach pace five SU women in double-figure kills with 13 while Haley Smith added 12, Rachel Roberts 11 and both Blake Parkes and Rachel Gross 10 each.
Jasmine Callahan had a match-high 55 assists with Schambach and Taylor Anderson both posting 16 digs.
The Hornets take on Hood and Lancaster Bible on Saturday as part of a quad match. Play begins at 9 am and runs through a 5:00 contest against LBC.
