WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Lynchburg College completed a season sweep of the Shenandoah Hornets with a 60-53 ODAC women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at Shingleton Gymnasium.
Shenandoah (7-10, 4-4 ODAC) fought back from a six-point halftime deficit to takea 30-29 lead at the 15:35 mark, but could not hold on against the league co-leader Lynchburg (10-7, 7-1).
SU took that one-point advantage thanks to a Holly Chittenden layup only to see LC answer with a Lauren Penley jumper 37 seconds and take the lead for good.
Penley's jumper from the paint, two of 38 points Lynchburg scored from in-close, started a 15-6 run over the next 7:25 that pushed the visitors lead out to eight points, 44-36, with 8:08 to play.
Lynchburg's lead eventually extended out to nine points on three occasions, the last with 2:17 remaining, before Shenandoah put on one more push.
Coach C.K. Calhoun's club answered a Shannon Allan jumper at 2:17 by scoring the next five points in a span of 70 seconds to cut the deficit to four, 55-51, with 67 seconds left.
Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, LC hit five of its final six from the line to clinch the victory.
Senior Crystal Petrus had 15 points for the hosts with Imani Heggins adding 13 and both Ashley McGhee and Chittenden 10 each.
Allan and Penley had 16 each for the victors.
Lynchburg outscored SU 38-24 on points in the paint and had a 39-29 advantage on the glass.
Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday at Washington and Lee in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
