Women Tie Maroons

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team completed its 2014 regular season Friday evening with a 1-1 ODAC tie versus Roanoke.

Shenandoah (7-9-2, 7-4-1 ODAC) clinches a tie for fifth place in the ODAC standings with the draw.

SU is currently one-half game ahead of Roanoke (10-6-1, 6-4-1) in the league standings, with the Maroons completing their league slate next week versus Guilford.

An RC win over the Quakers would tie Roanoke with the Hornets in the final standings. Regardless of outcome, both teams have qualified for the post-season tournament.

Roanoke scored the initial goal of the game in the 55th minute on a Marlana Barnard penalty kick.

Barnard ripped her shot into the left panel past diving Hornets keeper Erin Septer.

Just less than 18 minutes later, Shenandoah tied it as Catherine Major slipped a through pass into Elizabeth Bellido, who fought off a pair of Maroons defenders and knocked it past RC keeper Carolyn Sarbacher.

The two teams then played the remaining 18 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime without finding the back of the net.

Barnard and Septer each had to make one save in the OT.

Barnard had six of the game's 10 saves, including a penalty kick stop of the Hornets' Danielle Burris in the first half.

Barnard dove right to stop Burris' left-footed shot.

Shenandoah outshot its visitors 20-11 and had three of the game's four corner kicks.

Official tournament pairings will be announced next week.
