Hockey Rallies for Victory

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team completed its regular season Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 ODAC victory over Eastern Mennonite.

Shenandoah (11-6, 6-2 ODAC) ties a program record for victories in a season with the win over the Royals (4-14, 2-6).

Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft's club had to rally for the win, however, as EMU scored the game's initial goal in the 22nd minute.

Jenessa Derstine tallied that goal for the Royals, poking a rebound past SU keeper Jenna Rampale to give the visitors the early lead.

Shenandoah, outshot 5-2 in the opening stanza, turned up the heat following the break, taking four of the six shots in the final 35 minutes.

The last of those shots, by senior Ashley Cross with just 1:56 remaining, put the Hornets on top to stay.

Cross knocked in her team leading 12th goal of the year as freshman Elizabeth Pardo slid her feed right across the goalmouth to the waiting Cross, who only had to tap the shot over the line for the game-winner.

Pardo had brought the game back to level in the 56th minute when she redirected a Moriah Woods feed from the right corner.

Pardo, camped on the left post, only had to deflect the shot in to tie the game.

Rampale had three saves with Alana Meadows helping her out with two defensive stops.

The Hornets now move on to the ODAC Tournament beginning on Saturday. Official pairings will be announced later Wednesday.
