LEXINGTON, Va. – Host Washington and Lee scored the final four touchdowns Saturday afternoon to secure a 40-23 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah in the season finale for both schools.
Shenandoah (4-6, 2-5 ODAC) took a 23-14 lead following the second of two Drew Ferguson to Miles Green touchdown passes, but could only watch as the Generals (2-8, 2-5) dominated the fourth quarter.
W&L scored four touchdowns in the final stanza and held the ball for an even 10 minutes to secure the 17-point victory.
The Generals rushing attack, which ground out 460 of the squad's 521 yards on the day, had 180 of that total in the final 15 minutes.
Jimmy Dugan, one of two W&L players to crack the 100-yard barrier, basically clinched the victory with a 57-yard TD run at the 3:38 mark.
On the ensuing drive, the Hornets turned the ball over on downs at their own 6 where Marshall Hollerith blasted over from the 2 on second and goal for the final score of the contest.
Dugan finished the day with 143 yards rushing on just six carries while Hollerith added 122 yards on 22 rushes.
Hollerith had three touchdowns, scoring on runs on 3 and 1 yards in addition to his two-yarder.
Shenandoah, which trailed 14-10 at the break, took its second and final lead by driving 67 yards in 11 plays and 3:36 to start the third.
Green capped the drive with an 8-yard TD catch from Ferguson on 3rd and goal.
The Hornets got a Cedrick Bridges interception on a 4th and 11 from their own 25 on the Generals ensuing drive; Bridges picked it off at the 1 and returned it 25 yards to give his offense the ball at the SU 26.
It took 10 plays and 4:17 for Shenandoah to score that second Ferguson to Green touchdown and take the nine-point lead.
W&L answered with an 11-play, 71-yard drive to cut its deficit to two and following an SU three-and-out, took nine plays to drive 70 yards to take the lead for good.
Hollerith scored what proved to be the game-winning points on a 1-yard run with 7:59 to play.
Ferguson finished his final game 21 for 35 for 189 yards and three touchdowns against one interception.
Travis Barton, Jr., who played one series in the second quarter, was 5 for 8 for 24 yards and one TD.
Ferguson and Barton completed passes to 10 different receivers.
Junior Michael Messick had 16 tackles, including 12 solo, to become the single season record holder at Shenandoah. Messick finished with 117 tackles.
