WINCHESTER, Va. – Methodist University used a hot first half shooting performance to down host Shenandoah 81-67 Sunday afternoon in the consolation contest of the 2014 BB&T Tip-Off Classic.
The Monarchs (1-1) shot 62 percent (18 for 29) in the opening stanza and led for all but 32 seconds of the contest against Shenandoah (0-2).
Methodist didn't let up after the break, shooting 56 percent, as it turned its 12-point halftime led into the 14-point victory.
The Hornets were unable to significantly cut into the MU lead in the second half as the Monarchs opened the final 20 minutes on a 10-0 run and never let their lead fall below 14 points the rest of the way.
That advantage reached a game-high 28 points following a Tabias Hilliard layup with 7:04 to play.
Shenandoah scored 12 of the final 15 points of the contest, including nine of 12 points in the final 88 seconds, to provide the final margin.
Senior Jared Carithers had a game-high 22 points for the hosts while Malcolm Clark added 12 and Jimi Starks 10.
Mike Major had 17 points for Methodist to grab a spot on the All-Tournament team.
MU outrebounded the Hornets 34-31 and had a 42-20 advantage on points in the paint.
Shenandoah is off until hosting Mary Washington on Friday in the opening round of the South Region Classic. SU will also face N.C. Wesleyan in the classic format tourney.
