Women Rout Squirrels

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its second straight win to start the 2014-15 season with an 85-36 victory over Mary Baldwin Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-0) jumped all over the Squirrels (0-2), scoring 19 of the game's initial 21 points and leading 41-13 at the break.

The SU defense was outstanding, forcing MBC into 27 turnovers and scoring 37 points off of those miscues.

After shooting an even 50 percent (16 of 32), coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft saw her club torch the Warner Center nets at a 57 percent clip in the second, including making seven of eight attempts (88 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.

All 12 Shenandoah players who saw action in the contest scored at least two points with junior Ashley McGhee and freshman Kanesha Foster leading the way with 14 points each.

Freshman Morgan Kuhns, who like Foster came off the bench, added 13 points.

McGhee and Kuhns each canned four 3-pointers.

The five SU starters played a grand total of 69 minutes with McGhee's 18 minutes representing the high total among this group.

Shenandoah had 53 of its 85 points come from off the bench.

The Hornets open up their home slate on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a non-league game against Hood College.
