Marymount Rallies Past Women

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Marymount University overcame a slow start Monday to down Shenandoah 49-44 in non-conference women's basketball action.

Shenandoah (4-1) saw the Saints (3-1) miss their first nine shots from the field, but could not take advantage.

The Hornets, after scoring the first seven points of the game and 11 of the initial 13, had an 11-2 lead with 12:20 remaining in the first.

Marymount did not fold, however, scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points to cut its deficit to just one, 13-12, with 7:19 to play.

A Kirstyn Arcata 3-pointer appeared to stop the bleeding, but MU scored nine of the final 14 points of the half to send the two teams into the halftime break tied at 21-21.

The two teams traded buckets for the first five minutes of the second before Marymount seized control with a 13-2 run over 4:30 that gave the Saints a 39-28 lead with 9:45 to play.

The vistors' lead remained at least seven points until Ashley McGhee hit 3 of 3 from the line with 18 seconds remaining and Arcata hit a layup with three seconds left to provide the final margin.

Freshman Breya Wallace paced SU with 12 points while McGhee added nine and Holly Chittenden eight with seven rebounds.

Marymount outrebounded the Hornets 39-29, including 24-12 in the second half.

Kievanna Lacey had a game-high 16 for Marymount.

Shenandoah is off until opening ODAC play at Hollins on December 3.
