Hockey Falls in Heartbreaker

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Second-seeded Bridgewater College ended Shenandoah University's field hockey season with a 2-1 overtime victory Wednesday evening in the ODAC Tournament semi-finals.

Shenandoah (12-7) forced the overtime thanks to a Kelani Bailey goal off of a Presha Merritt assist with 14 seconds remaining in regulation, but could not get the game-winner.

Continuing after a penalty corner, Bailey took Merritt's feed in front and ripped her shot past BC keeper Amanda Harper to send the SU faithful into a frenzy.

The Eagles (12-7), who had taken the lead on a Taylor Prillaman goal in the 47th minute, won it on a Prillaman goal 9:19 into OT.

Prillaman brought the ball down in front and lost possession to an SU defender just to the left of Hornets keeper Jenna Rampale, who was hugging the post.

The ball squirted just in front of Rampale, where the Shenandoah defender inadvertently deflected it between Rampale's legs and in for the game-winner.

This is the third consecutive overtime win for Bridgewater over SU.

BC outshot the Hornets 17-11 while the Hornets took seven of the game's 12 corners.

Rampale had 10 saves.

Shenandoah will announce its 2015 schedule late this winter.
