Women Claw 'Cats

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 73-50 ODAC win over Randolph College.

The win gives SU (9-13, 6-8 ODAC) a sweep of the season series with Randolph (10-12, 4-9) and keeps the Hornets in position to earn a home game at the upcoming ODAC Tournament.

Coach C.K. Calhoun's club is now in seventh place in the league standings with two games to play. Should SU maintain its top eight position, the Hornets will host an opening round tournament game next Monday, February 24.

Shenandoah controlled Saturday's contest virtually from the outset, and following a pair of Holly Chittenden free throws at the 14:55 mark of the first, led the remainder of the contest.

Chittenden's two freebies started an 11-4 run for the Hornets with gave the hosts a six-point, 17-11, advantage with 10:30 remaining in the first.

This bulge eventually pushed itself out to 12 points following an Ashley McGhee 3-pointer with 3:56 to play before the 'Cats ended the first on a 9-2 run.

Calhoun's club answered that run with an Olivia Callan 3-pointer and a Chantelle Phung jumper to start the second and the Hornets never looked back.

SU held a double-digit lead for all but 17 seconds the rest of the way.

The lead first reached 20 points at the 10:52 mark and hit a game-high 24 thanks to an Elisa Owens free throw with 38 seconds left.

Senior Crystal Petrus paced the victors with a game-high 20 with Imani Heggins adding 13 and McGhee 10.

Chittenden just missed a double-double, combining a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Bria Carlisle had 12 points and Emilee Dunton 11 for the visitors.

Calhoun's club plays its final regular season home game of the season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite.
