WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team punched its ticket to Salem Monday night with a 69-51 victory over Randolph in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament.
The Hornets (10-16) advance to the tournament quarterfinals with the win over Randolph (11-15).
SU will face top-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the opening game of the day thanks to its third win this season over the WildCats.
Coach C.K. Calhoun's club led throughout, but saw Randolph make matters interesting by draining three straight 3-pointers to start the second.
The Hornets led 34-22 at the break only to see Abgail Bullins sandwich a pair of 3-balls around an Emilee Dunton 3-pointer to make the score 34-33 with 17:39 remaining.
Sophomore Imani Heggins stopped the string with a jumper at 17:12 and then junior Holly Chittenden scored her team's next eight points to push the advantage back out to nine points with with 14:02 remaining.
From this point on, SU held at least a seven-point advantage.
The lead reached double-digits by the halfway mark of the second and remained there for the final 7:31 of the contest.
Calhoun's club eventually led by 19 points following a pair of Olivia Callan free throws with 2:10 remaining.
Chittenden led all players with 21 points and 10 rebounds with Heggins adding 12, Callan 11 and senior Crystal Petrus 16.
Shenandoah shot 48 percent for the game and outrebounded the 'Cats 35-34.
