BRIDGEWATER, Va. – No. 10 Shenandoah University saw its men's basketball season end Tuesday night with a 93-87 overtime loss to No. 7 Bridgewater in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament.
Shenandoah (12-14) was seeking its first-ever trip to the Salem Civic Center for the tournament quarterfinals, but Bridgewater (14-11) had other ideas.
Trailing by seven points with 3:27 remaining after Avery Green nailed a layup for the Hornets, BC scored 11 of the final 15 points of regulation to force the overtime.
The Eagles actually had two chances to win it in regulation, missing two shots and committing a turnover in the final six seconds.
Tavis Stapleton then scored the opening bucket of the overtime, hitting a jumper 21 seconds into the extra session, and Bridgewater never trailed again.
Junior Jared Carithers answered Stapleton's jumper with a layup at 4:18 before Ed Reddick's three-point play at 3:57 put BC on top to stay.
The Eagles lead reached six points on two different occasions, but SU was able to keep it a two-possession contest for the remaining time.
Bridgewater, which had made 19 of its first 20 free throws, missed four of its final eight in the last minute.
Shenandoah had excellent balance in its scoring, with four of five starters registering at least 10 points.
Green, the leading scorer in the ODAC, led this group with 30 points.
This is the fourth time this season he cracked the 30-point mark.
Carithers added 23, Dante Seraile 12 and Brandon Pressley 10 in support of Green's 30.
The remaining starter, CJ Rudisill, had 10 rebounds.
The two teams shot virtually equal – 42.6 percent for BC and 42.3 percent for Shenandoah with the Eagles holding a 51-40 advantage on the glass.
Ed Reddick had 23 points and 12 rebounds for BC.
