Roanoke Outlasts Men

WINCHESTER, Va. – Host Shenandoah University suffered through a cold shooting performance Saturday afternoon in an 80-75 ODAC men's basketball loss to Roanoke.

The Hornets (12-9, 4-8 ODAC) shot 36 percent from the field (25 of 69) in the loss to Roanoke (10-10, 4-8).

Included in that performance was a 12 of 39 showing (31 percent) in the opening stanza that helped the Maroons jump out to a 39-32 halftime lead.

Shenandoah, which trailed by all but 90 seconds of the contest, fought back from a eight-point deficit to trail by just one, 73-72, following a Kevin Lecsaint three-point play with 2:04 remaining.

The Hornets scored seven straight points in a span of just 34 seconds, starting with Jared Carithers fast break layup at 2:38, to begin the comeback.

Unfortunately for the capacity crowd at Shingleton Gymnasium, the Maroons answered with seven straight points to regain control of the contest.

Trailing by three points, Shenandoah turned it over on two straight possessions with just more than a minute to play.

Senior Avery Green, who had a game-high 29 points, brought the hosts back into a one-possession contest with nine seconds left, but SU could not force a backcourt steal and Ethan Humphries hit both of his free throws to clinch the victory.

Carithers backed up Green's 29 points with 10 points.

Daniel Eacho,, the current ODAC Player of the Week, had 27 points and 15 boards for the visitors.

Roanoke outrebounded SU 48-45.

Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday at Bridgewater in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
