WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened up its 2014 home slate Saturday afternoon by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Stevenson.
Shenandoah (1-3) won game one 10-2 in five innings before Stevenson (1-1) was an 11-4 victor in the nightcap.
Sophomore Megan Tripp (1-1) went the distance in the opener, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk.
She struck out three.
Coach Marlena Kotynski's club banged out 15 hits in the victory, including four from leadoff hitter Brittany Guepe and three from shortstop Heather Sink.
Sink and sophomore Madison Bradley both drove in three runs.
Bradley was 2 for 2 in the contest.
Senior Erica Kondzielawa also had two hits in the win.
The Mustangs salvaged the split by pushing across six runs in the second inning of the nightcap.
The Hornets answered with two in their half of the frame and added two more in the sixth, but the damage was done.
Freshman Lindsey Corbin (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Kondzielawa, Kimberly Brady and Corbin all had two hits to lead the offense.
Emily Wilson drove in a pair of runs.
Kotynski's club hosts Frostburg State tomorrow at 1:00 in another non-league doubleheader.
