Anderson Earns 300th SU Win

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its third straight ODAC baseball sweep Saturday afternoon, and in the process head coach Kevin Anderson earned win No. 300 as the Hornets skipper.

Shenandoah (11-2, 7-0 ODAC) was a 15-12 winner in the opening game before taking game two, 12-5.

Trailing by five runs heading into the third inning of game one as the Tigers (15-5, 1-3), the Hornets took control with a 12-run third.

Anderson's club sent 16 men to the plate in the frame and banged out 11 hits to take total control of the contest.

Corbin Lucas, Billy Arens, Michael Paul and Dan Powers all had two hits in the inning with Paul driving four runs on a pair of two-run doubles.

Eight of the nine Hornets starters reached base safely during this rally with the remaining player, left fielder Andrew Creamer, contributing a sacrifice bunt.

Now staked to the 12-5 lead, SU scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and nine innings to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Cameron Lundmark (1-0), the fifth pitcher of the contest for Shenandoah, earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work. He struck out four and allow one hit.

Lucas, Arens, Paul and Daniel Freshley all had at least three hits.

Freshley had four of the squad's 20 hits in the win.

SU scored the initial seven runs of the nightcap, but then needed a five-run eighth as H-SC made matters interesting with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Paul capped that five-run eightth with a two-run HR to give the Hornets the needed breathing room.

Sophomore Darrell Thompson improved to 4-0 after pitching the first seven innings of the contest. Thompson gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four.

Matt Riegler gave up two hits in the eighth and ninth to close out the sweep.

Anderson's club had 20 hits in the game two victory, including at least one by all nine starters.

Lucas, Arens, J.J. McDaniel and Creamer all had three hits each with Powers and Freshley two each.

Anderson is now 300-146 as the program's head coach and needs just three wins for win No. 450 in his college career.

Shenandoah is back in action tomorrow at 2 in a non-league game against No.7 Cortland (N.Y.) State.
