Baseball Falls in Championship

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Third-seeded Bridgewater College earned the 2014 ODAC Baseball Championship Sunday with a 6-5 victory over No. 14/18 Shenandoah.

Bridgewater (31-12) had to beat SU (31-9) twice on Sunday to earn the title, and the Eagles accomplished the task with 5-2 and 6-5 wins.

In game two, the Hornets erased a three-run deficit with five runs in the fifth, but could not hold the lead.

BC cut its deficit in half on a Zach Hynes solo HR in the sixth and then scored two runs off of SU ace Darrell Thompson (9-2) in the eighth to retake the lead.

Thompson, the ODAC Pitcher of the Year, came on in relief midway through the seventh with runners on first and second and two outs to get an inning-ending fly to right.

In the eighth, BC catcher Trevor Hoffman ripped a two-out double into the gap in left center to score the tying and winning runs.

Shenandoah had taken that 5-3 lead by combining four hits along with a two-base error by the Eagles to score five unearned.

Junior Nolan Overby, one of three Hornets to be selected to the All-Tournament team, had the big blow in the frame with a two-run dinger to left.

Billy Arens and Corbin Lucas also drove in runs with a single and a fielder's choice, respectively.

Lucas had a one-out double in the seventh, but was left stranded as Overby struck out and Michael Paul grounded out to second.

Paul and Dan Powers joined Overby on the All-Tournament team.

Corey Armentrout, who pitched a scoreless ninth for Bridgewater, was the Most Outstanding Player. Armentrout had a win and two saves (both Sunday) for the Eagles in the tournament.

Robert Gallet (4-1) was the winner. He struck out four and allowed two hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief work.

Shenandoah will now wait until May 12 for a possible at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament field.
