WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Frostburg State prevented the Shenandoah University football team from posting its first-ever two-game winning streak to start a season by downing the Hornets 20-10 in non-league action Saturday night on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
Frostburg (2-0) won its second straight game despite seeing SU (1-1) outgain it by 121 yards and five first downs.
Shenandoah rolled up 402 yards in offense, including 237 on the ground, but trailed virtually the entire contest as FSU took the lead for good at the 5:14 mark of the first.
The Bobcats drove 75 yards in 10 plays, capped by a Ben Sasu 25-yard scamper around left end to score that initial touchdown.
Coach Scott Yoder's club, keyed by a 63-yard Cedrick Delaney run, got on the board with a 27-yard field goal from freshman Jacob Newton 2:44 before the halftime gun.
Unfortunately for the Shenandoah faithful, this would be as close as the home team would get.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the third, with the Hornets scoring on a 1-yard run from Kye Hopkins, before Frostburg closed out the scoring with a Ken Emmons 1-yard sneak at 13:06 of the fourth.
SU appeared to have forced the Bobcats into a fourth and goal situation one play prior to Emmons' run, but were called for a deadball personal foul penalty and used this new life to score the game's final points.
The Hornets final scoring opportunity came on a 4th and 7 field goal attempt from the Bobcats 20, but a bad snap forced holder David Bell into an errant pass attempt that ended the drive.
Delaney paced Shenandoah with 135 yards on 13 carries while quarterback Drew Ferguson was 18 of 33 for 165 yards and one interception.
Linebacker Michael Messick had 10 tackles.
Shenandoah is back at home next Saturday night at 7 p.m. against longtime rival Ferrum.
