WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team opened up its 2014 ODAC slate Saturday morning with a 3-0 sweep of Guilford College.
Shenandoah (8-3, 1-0 ODAC) was a 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 victor over Guilford (3-3, 0-1).
SU then completed its day by dropping a 3-1 non-league decision to Messiah (8-2).
The Quakers actually led for most of the first set before Shenandoah rallied for the win in the opening match of the day.
Trailing 13-7, the Hornets scored three straight points to get back into it before GC extended its lead back to five at 16-11 following a Michaela Wall kill.
Coach Jaime Terenzi used her first time-out at this point and her club responded by scoring six of the game's next seven points to knot matters at 17-17.
Junior Blake Parkes had the final point on this run with a service ace.
The two teams were then tied at 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 before an Elizabeth Lamont kill followed by another Parkes ace clinched the set one win for the hosts.
Shenandoah did trail at all in the second and thanks to a 5-0 run early in the third, coasted home to the victory.
Parkes had nine kills for the Hornets with Allie Pieper adding eight.
Rachel Cerretani had 26 of the squad's 34 assists.
Against Messiah, the Hornets and Falcons traded wins at 19 in the opening two sets before MC clinched the victory with wins at 18 in the third and fourth.
Senior Rachel Gross had a match-high 14 kills for the hosts and Brandi Griffith added 12 digs.
SU is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
