WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team earned its second straight victory Wednesday evening with a 3-2 non-league win over York (Pa.).
The Hornets (4-4) broke a halftime tie with two second half goals to send YCP (7-2) down to defeat for the just the second time this season.
The win also gains a measure of revenge for SU as the Spartans took one-goal victories over Shenandoah in both 2012 and 2013.
Senior Ashley Cross put coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft's squad ahead to stay Wednesday night, converting a feed from Presha Merritt in the 39th minute.
Cross' goal, her seventh of the season, broke a 1-1 tie caused when Dempsey Murphy's goal for the visitors in the 26th minute.
Junior Kelani Bailey had scored the initial goal of the game, tallying off a Merritt assist exactly seven minutes prior to Murphy's equalizer.
Bailey then had an unassisted goal in the 55th minute that became the game-winner when the Spartans scored unassisted with 8:05 remaining.
The Hornets outshot YCP 13-6 and had a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
SU keeper Jenna Rampale only had to make one save to earn the win.
Shenandoah opens ODAC play on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is 1 p.m.
