WINCHESTER, Va. – In a game marked by three significant runs, visiting Bridgewater had the last one in a 61-52 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday evening.
The Eagles (7-6, 2-3 ODAC) put SU (5-9, 1-4) away with an 11-2 run from the 6:11 to 3:07 marks of the second half that turned a one-point advantage into a 10-point bulge.
BC needed that run as Shenandoah roared back into the game on the strength of an 18-5 spurt that brought the Hornets to that one-point deficit following a Holly Chittenden layup at the 6:20 mark.
Bridgewater answered with 11 of the game's 13 points, broken up only by a Chittenden layup at 4:30, to essentially seal the victory.
The Hornets would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The initial run of the contest came in the first half. With Shenandoah leading 14-9 following a Breya Wallace fastbreak jumper at 11:42, the Eagles took a lead they would not relinquish by scoring the game's next 17 points over a span of 8:47.
By the time that Wallace canned a jumper at 1:53 to end the scoreless drought, the five-point SU lead had turned into a 10-point deficit.
The gap was nine at the break and grew to 14 points on two occasions, the last at 11:08, before Shenandoah began its comeback with a Kirstyn Arcata jumper in the paint at 9:52.
Cassidy Burkholder had a game-high 20 points for the victors with fellow starters Jessi Strom, Oshene Kelly and Jessica Lam all adding 12 points each.
BC had all of its scoring production come from the starting lineup.
Chittenden had 18 points and a co-game-high 13 rebounds for the Hornets to record her 20th career double-double.
Wallace had 13 points off the bench while Erin French posted 10 rebounds.
SU had a slight, 40-38, advantage on the glass.
The Hornets shot 34 percent (23 of 68) for the game while BC shot 44 percent (20 of 45).
Shenandoah travels to Emory & Henry on Saturday for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
