Women's Soccer Overthrows Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team won for the seventh time in the past eight games with a 1-0 ODAC shutout over No. 21 Washington and Lee Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Danielle Burris scored the game's lone goal on a breakaway in the 27th minute to push the Hornets (7-6, 4-1 ODAC) past nationally ranked W&L (9-3, 5-2).

Washington and Lee is ranked No. 21 in the latest www.d3soccer.com poll.

The win is the first for SU over the Generals since a 3-2 overtime victory in the 2012 ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.

It is also the third straight 1-0 regular season contest between the two schools. The Generals won the first two, winning in Lexington during the 2013 season and in Winchester last year.

Burris' tally held up as Hornets goalkeeper Erin Septer make five saves in recording her sixth shutout of the season.

Septer also combined with Nicole Pratt on one additional shutout this year.

W&L held slight advantages in shots, 12-11, and corner kicks, 5-3, in the contest.

"This was a total team effort," Hornets coach Liz Pike said. "We prepared all week for this game and everyone came to play.

"We also had an outstanding defensive save from Alysha McCleaf to maintain our lead."

McCleaf's save came 20 minutes into the second half.

Shenandoah returns home on Saturday for a 5 p.m. ODAC contest against Randolph.
