Generals Outlast Football

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Washington and Lee completed its first-ever 10-0 regular season with a 34-21 ODAC victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon before 1533 Shentel Stadium fans.

The Generals (10-0, 7-0), who wrapped up the league title last week with a home win over Catholic, jumped out to a 28-0 lead over the Hornets (4-6, 1-6) before having to hold on for the victory.

Trailing 28-0 after Whit Hawkins hauled in a 28-yard TD pass from quarterback Matt Sgro, Shenandoah answered with three scores in a span of just 2:38.

Junior Qlyl Middelijn had the first TD, a 39-yard pass from quarterback Hayden Bauserman, before the Hornets executed their second successful onside kick of the season to retain possession.

It took just six plays and 1:32 to drive 56 yards, ending with a Bauserman to Leonard Scott 8-yard TD pass, to make it 28-14.

Shenandoah then kicked off to the Generals, and W&L made that decision look brilliant by fumbling the ball back to SU at that the Washington and Lee 23.

Sixty-two seconds later, Bauserman hit senior Garrett Rohrbaugh on a 4-yard swing pass and the Hornets were down just seven, 28-21.

W&L, which coughed up the ball four times (three fumbles), rebounded from that last fumble to drive 88 yards in 12 plays to seal the victory.

Duncan Maxwell, who was one of two Generals to rush for at least 100 yards, carried it the final 26 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

Washington & Lee also converted a 4th-and-1 from its own 48 midway through the drive.

The Generals finished the day with 483 yards in total offense; Sgro's 28-yard TD pass to Hawkins was his squad's only completion of the day.

Shenandoah had 244 of its 411 yards through the air – Bauserman was 21 for 35 for the 244 and three touchdowns against two interceptions.

Junior Cedrick Delaney, who missed most of the second half with an injury, led all players with 120 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Marshall Hollerith had 110 yards and two TDs for the visitors.

Cedrick Bridges had 16 tackles and Micheal Wroble 11 to lead the SU defense.

Shenandoah will announce its 2016 schedule next month.
