Women's Hoops Falls in Overtime

FREDERICK, Md. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team staged a furious comeback Tuesday evening before falling 67-58 in overtime to Hood College in non-conference action.

Shenandoah (2-3) trailed by nine points, 39-30, with 8:18 to play in regulation but scored 18 of the final 27 points of the fourth period to force overtime versus the Blazers (3-2).

Sophomore Kanesha Foster capped the 18-9 run by hitting a pair from the line with 27 seconds remaining.

The Hornets forced a missed shot on the Hood offensive end, where Erin French corralled the defensive rebound at the 17-second mark and SU coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft immediately called timeout to take advantage of the new advancement rule.

Following the full timeout, Shenandoah inbounded in the front court and eventually worked it to Kirstyn Arcata at the top of the key for the game-winning attempt. Arcata's shot was just short, giving the ball back to Hood underneath its own basket.

French gave Shenandoah another chance as she stole the inbounds pass and put up a buzzer-beating left-handed layup that caromed off the right side of the rim.

The Blazers then seized control by scoring six of the first seven points of the extra period, eventually pushing their advantage out to nine, and did not let SU get closer than six the rest of the way.

The Hornets shot 23 percent to 32 percent for Hood and saw the Blazers score 24 points off of 26 SU turnovers.

Hood also had a 40-36 advantage on the glass.

Freshman Shannon Kuhn led Smelter-Kraft's club with 19 points in her first career start.

Shenandoah is off until December 5, when it travels to Emory and Henry for the opening game of the ODAC slate.
