Men Outflank Generals

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its second straight win of the season Wednesday night with a 68-61 ODAC victory over Washington and Lee.

The Hornets (4-18, 3-10) have now won consecutive games for the first time since January 11 and 13, 2014, a span of 35 games.

After leading throughout the first half over W&L (8-14, 5-8), Shenandoah found itself in a battle as the Generals took their first lead thanks to a 12-2 run from the 19:10 to 14:55 marks of the second.

This lead change was one of eight in the final 20 minutes with the two teams tied on six other occasions.

Following this run, the two teams remained with three points of one another until SU pulled away by scoring 14 of the game's final 21 points.

Trailing by three, 54-51 following a Patrick O'Connor jumper at 5:53, the Hornets took their final lead of the game by ripping off the next 12 points of the contest over the next 4:15.

Staked to a nine-point, 63-54, lead following a pair of Xavier Alston free throws at the 1:38 mark, SU was able to coast home to the win as W&L came no closer than six points the rest of the way.

The margin reached 10 with 17 seconds left as senior Eli McEathron drained a pair from the charity stripe before Andrew Franz closed the book on the night's scoring with a 3-pointer nine seconds before the final horn.

Shenandoah took a 30-24 lead into the halftime locker room thanks to 50 percent (13 of 26) shooting from the field in the first and then shot 58 percent (11 of 19) in the second half.

The 53 percent shooting is a season-high for the squad.

Alston, playing in his final game at Shingleton Gymnasium, had 15 points with sophomore Aaron Patterson adding 14.

Clayton Murtha had 16 points and 11 boards for the Generals.

W&L had a 34-25 advantage on the boards, which translated to a 14-4 bulge in second chance points.

SU begins a three-game road trip to finish the 2014-15 regular season with a 4:00 Saturday contest at Lynchburg.
