ASHLAND, Va. - Host Randolph-Macon celebrated its No. 1 national ranking in Division III men's basketball with a 103-72 ODAC victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (22-2, 15-0 ODAC), playing their first game as the nation's No. 1 team, jumped all over SU (4-20, 3-12).
R-MC scored eight of the game's initial 10 points and led all but 1:18 of the contest in earning its 19th straight victory.
Macon first pushed its advantage into double digits at the 6:33 mark of the first, led 47-23 at the break and expanded the lead to 30 points thanks to a pair of Chris Hamilton free throws with 16:41 to play.
The lead reached a maximum of 37 points on three occasions, the last with 3:50 remaining.
Shenandoah then scored 13 of the final 20 points of the game to provide the final margin.
Sophomore Aaron Patterson had a team-high 15 points for the Hornets with Malcolm Clark adding 11.
Senior Xavier Alston just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
SU saw 12 of the 14 men who saw action in the contest score at least one point.
R-MC played 17 men, none more than 21 minutes, and received a game-high 22 points from Joe Hassell off the bench.
Shenandoah completes the regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Hampden-Sydney.
