BRIDGEWATER, Va. – No. 22 Christopher Newport University swept Shenandoah University in non-league softball action played Saturday afternoon at Bridgewater College.
The Captains (9-4) were 6-0 winners in the opener before taking the nightcap over SU (3-9) 3-2.
In game one, CNU pitcher Krista Lewis (5-2) allowed the Hornets just one hit, a fifth inning single from sophomore Lindsay Corbin, in earning the win.
Lewis struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The Captains struck for two runs in the first and one in the second inning of game two to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Shenandoah got itself back in the game with one in the fourth and another in the sixth, but left the tying run stranded on third in that sixth inning.
Kimberly Brady had two of the Hornets eight game two hits with Lisa Mitro adding two along with an RBI.
Mitro drove in Corbin on a fielder's choice in the fourth and had a single in the 2nd and a double in the sixth. She also took the loss in the pitching circle, falling to 1-2 on the season after allowing three runs on three hits and five walks.
SU is back on the road tomorrow with an ODAC doubleheader at Randolph-Macon.
