BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team earned its third straight ODAC Tournament berth thanks to a 10-9 victory at Bridgewater Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (11-3, 7-1 ODAC) led throughout, but had to hold on as Bridgewater (6-8, 3-5) scored the final three goals of the contest.
Leading 10-5 after freshman Annie McCorry converted a free position shot with 7:38 remaining, SU saw its hosts score at 6:52, 6:03, 4:15 and 3:42 to make it a one-goal contest.
Shenandoah then won the ensuing draw and combined a long offensive possession with a strong defensive effort to hold the Eagles without a shot for the remainder of the contest.
Junior Miranda Rudacille opened the scoring for the victors with an unassisted goal at 27:24, and after Liz Bereit broke a 2-2 tie with an unassisted tally at 12:02, the Hornets would lead the rest of the way.
Coach Lindsey Lutz' squad took a 4-3 lead into the break and scored six of the first eight goals of the second to lead that five-goal lead with 7:38 remaining.
McCorry had three goals and Rudacille two during this run.
Both women finished with three goals on the night while Cortney Gensemer had two goals and an assist and Bereit a goal and three assists.
SU outshot its hosts 24-20 while BC had a 15-14 advantage in groundballs and won 14 of 21 draws.
Shenandoah continues this regular-season ending road trip with a Saturday game at Virginia Wesleyan. The Hornets can still reach the No. 2 seed in the ODAC Tournament, but will need wins over the Marlins Saturday and Randolph-Macon next Wednesday to earn the bye into the tournament semi-finals.
