Women's Lax Drops Heartbreaker

ASHLAND, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team completed its regular season Wednesday afternoon with a 12-11 loss at Randolph-Macon.

Shenandoah (12-4, 8-2 ODAC) scored three of the final four goals of the game, but Macon (13-3, 9-1) was able to make its four-goal halftime lead standup.

Trailing 9-5 at halftime, Cortney Gensemer scored twice and Abby Zorrilla once to bring the Hornets to within one, 9-8, with 22:28 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets answered by scoring the game's next two goals before senior Liz Bereit buried her 50th goal of the season to begin Shenandoah's game-ending run.

Annie McCorry and Gensemer tallied at 10:48 and 7:33, respectively, but SU could not bring the game back to level.

Shenandoah's best chance for the equalizing goal came on a Gensemer free position shot with 5:28 remaining, but the attempt went high.

The win for the 'Jackets gives Macon the No. 2 seed at the upcoming ODAC Tournament.

Should Shenandoah, as the No. 3 seed, advance past the No. 6 seed in Saturday's quarterfinal round, the Hornets will have a rematch with R-MC one week from today.

Macon outshot SU 27-17 and had a 20-5 advantage in draw controls.

The two teams split 28 groundballs and Hornets keeper Rachel Levy had 10 saves.

Official pairings for the ODAC Tournament will be announced tonight. Shenandoah, as the No. 3 seed, will host the sixth seed on Saturday at a time to be determined.
