Women Close Out Hollins

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball completed a season sweep of Hollins University with a 57-47 ODAC victory Monday evening.

The Hornets (5-12, 2-6 ODAC) won for the second time in five games by downing Hollins (3-12, 0-8) for the second time this season.

With the halftime score knotted at 26-26, Shenandoah outscored HU 18-6 in the third stanza to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Junior Erin French, who had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points, gave coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club the lead for good by making one of two from the line with 6:48 remaining in the third.

French's free throw started a 16-4 run to close out the period and Shenandoah never let its lead drop back into single digits the rest of the way.

A 7-2 run to start the fourth expanded the Hornets lead to seven points with 7:21 remaining before Hollins closed out the contest by scoring 13 of the game's final 20 points.

Junior Olivia Callan led the victors with 13 points with Kanesha Foster adding 12.

Nikki Valencia had 18 points for HU.

"Great team win today," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We had awesome ball movement and we got different people to step up and score for us. I was also really impressed with our work on the boards."

Shenandoah outrebounded Hollins 53-35, which led to a 15-6 bulge in second chance points.

Seven of the nine women appearing in the game for the Hornets score at least four points.

SU is on the road Wednesday in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Bridgewater.
