Marlins Sweep Volleyball

By Cory Nelson '12

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team completed its 2016 season Saturday with a 3-0 ODAC loss at Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins (16-14, 6-5 ODAC) earned the sweep over SU (13-16, 4-7) by downing the Hornets 25-22, 25-19, and 25-14.

In the process, VWC qualified for the eight-team ODAC Tournament and knocked Shenandoah out of tournament contention. Saturday's match was effectively a tournament play in game with the winner advancing and the loser failing to qualify.

The opening set was neck and neck throughout, with scores all square at 10, 13, 16 and 17. The Marlins took the lead 17-16 and despite every effort from the Hornets to answer back, VWC never relinquished that lead.

Virginia Wesleyan carried that momentum into the second set, quickly jumping ahead 15-5. SU battled back and made matters interesting, but the deficit proved too much for the team too much to overcome.

With the third set still close and SU trailing 18-14, the Marlins used a 7-0 run to clinch the victory.

Kaitlyn Kelley led the Hornets in the match with 12 kills while Jasmine Callahan added seven and Emily Cheatwood five.

Senior Rachel Cerretani assisted on 23 of the Hornets kills in the final match of her collegiate career.

Callahan, Caylin Harris, and Kelley each registered double digit digs with 15, 11, and 10, respectively.
