Women's Soccer Stings Wasps

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its seventh straight win Saturday afternoon with an 8-0 ODAC victory over Emory and Henry.

Shenandoah (11-2, 5-0 ODAC) needed just 2:50 to score what proved to be the game-winning goal over the Wasps (3-9, 0-4).

Freshman Emily Yergin, the nation's goals leader, tallied the first of her two goals on the day by finishing off a Michelle Krause assist just 2:50 in.

It took less than three minutes for Yergin to strike again; senior Alysha McCleaf set up Yergin's 19th goal of the season at 5:44.

Jessica Stuart and Micayla Hellerstendt closed out the first half scoring with goals in the 21st and 45th minutes, respectively.

Jennifer Nguyen had the assist on Stuart's tally while Bretton Butler put Hellerstendt in position to score.

In the second, senior Anna Wilson was involved in the first two goals of the stanza. She set up Dornesha Cottoms at 73:44 before scoring herself at 74:44. Sara Fuller had the assist on Wilson's goal.

Cottoms closed the book on the day's scoring with goals at 80:03 and 84:56.

Shenandoah took all 37 of the game's shots and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"Poor weather conditions made for an ugly game, but it was another good ODAC win," SU coach Liz Pike said. "Dornesha Cottoms had a strong performance coming off the bench."

The Hornets continue this homestand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. non-league contest against No. 14/RV Johns Hopkins.
