WINCHESTER, Va. – Fourth-seeded Shenandoah University advanced to its fifth straight ODAC Field Hockey Tournament semi-final with a 5-1 quarterfinal round victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday evening.
Shenandoah (11-8) advances to Friday's semi-final versus No. 1 Lynchburg. That game will be played at 5 p.m. on Shellenberger Field on the Lynchburg College campus.
The Hornets, who took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a Taylor Hayes to Kayla Alderman goal at 16:53, completely blew the game open early in the second.
Shenandoah pumped in four goals in a span of 5:36 to turn the one-goal lead over the Marlins (7-11) into a 5-0 rout.
Sophomore Morgan Payne had a natural hat trick during this run, scoring at 38:42, 41:14 and 42:42. Katelyn Curtis, Taylor Little and Elizabeth Pardo set up those three tallies.
Melissa DeiTos completed the run by scoring unassisted on a breakaway at 44:18.
VWC, which had six of its eight shots in the second half, scored its lone goal at 65:07.
Shenandoah outshot the Marlins 19-8 and had a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Hornets goalkeeper Jessica Brown had to make just one save to earn the victory.
